Microsoft and Partners Use Technology to Become a Catalyst for Global Aid and Development
In her July 14 keynote, Linda Zecher, Corporate Vice President, Worldwide Public Sector, expanded upon ideas offered in the morning keynote given by President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States. President Clinton called for help from the partner community to create sustainable systems and ensure that IT becomes a key catalyst in building a virtuous cycle of social and economic development. Zecher’s keynote included several examples of how Microsoft Partners are meeting the unique needs of customers in education, government, health and public safety, and national security with cutting-edge solutions.
Further highlighting on these themes, Zecher published a blog post on the Official Microsoft Blog Wednesday - Technology is the Catalyst for Change in the Public Sector, which was cross posted on Microsoft on the Issues. In addition, Frank McCosker, Managing Director of Multilateral and Bilateral Organizations, Public Sector, posted a complementary post on the Microsoft Unlimited Potential website - 1+1=3: How Microsoft’s Partnerships with International Organizations Help Save Lives and Offer Hope. This post highlights the importance of technology in creating solutions and assisting countries to foster economic growth, promote social development, and address environmental sustainability.
The blog posts and Zecher’s keynote featured partner solutions as examples of how Microsoft and partners are helping governments and NGOs become more efficient, engage citizens, and create opportunities and jobs. Examples included the Haiti Integrated Government Platform, being built with the Inter-American Development Bank and Infusion Development; and Twisted Pair’s communication solution developed on Microsoft Office Communicator for the World Food Programme (WFP). You can also watch a video of their solution.
Zecher reminded partners of Microsoft’s commitment to join them in working with governments and educational institutions around the world to provide lower cost technology solutions that meet the growing demands governments are facing. Microsoft is committed to working with partners to find technology solutions that help to improve the operations of government and the delivery of services to its citizens, expand the quality and reach of educational opportunities, and find new ways to grow local economies. “Microsoft sees service providers becoming more important as the cloud becomes more predominant. Given their experience in deploying and selling infrastructure and software as a service, businesses will depend on them for IT as a service,” said John Zanni, general manager of Worldwide Hosting for the Communications Sector at Microsoft. “The next step for service providers is to look beyond their current hosted offerings to become full-service IT providers and trusted advisors to businesses.”

Microsoft Recognizes Partners for Innovation, Specialization, Differentiation
It’s one thing to create a software and services platform capable of running a business, but it’s another thing entirely to tailor that platform to run a bank, or a school, or a small retail store. That’s why Microsoft relies on an ecosystem of more than 640,000 Microsoft partners, whose role is to understand the needs of specific industries and customers, and design IT systems accordingly.
Each year, the Microsoft Partner of the Year Awards recognize those who have made a difference in creating the right solutions for customers. As senior director of Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Group, Pam Salzer is one of the administrators of the awards program. In the course of her work, Salzer has seen firsthand how a real understanding of customers and industries can enhance the value of just about any technology.
“This year’s class includes some interesting stories of partners who took the Microsoft platform a little farther,” Salzer says, “whether by building a new approach to suit a particular industry, or simply through outstanding customer service.”

Microsoft Announces New Leadership in Worldwide Partner and U.S. Subsidiary Groups
Allison Watson and Jon Roskill to Take on New Roles
Microsoft announced today that Allison Watson, corporate vice president of the Microsoft Partner Group, and Jon Roskill, corporate vice president of the Business & Marketing Organization in the U.S, will take on new roles within the company.
“Microsoft is focused on building and maintaining a strong and dynamic management team,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer for Microsoft. “A key part of that focus is being deliberate about how we move talent across the company and making sure we offer a diverse set of experiences for our executives. Both Allison and Jon have a long history working in multiple divisions throughout Microsoft, and I’m excited that they have both agreed to tackle and take on new challenges in their new roles.”
Effective July 1, Roskill will assume the role of corporate vice president of the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Group, where he will focus on helping the partner community capitalize on new areas of growth, such as unified communications, virtualization and cloud computing. In his previous role leading the U.S. Business & Marketing Organization, Roskill led cross-company marketing campaigns for Microsoft’s commercial products such as Windows and Microsoft Office, and played a major role in bringing the company’s cloud computing efforts to market over the past year. Roskill will report to Vahé Torossian, corporate vice president of the Worldwide Small and Midmarket Solutions & Partners (SMS&P) Group. Torossian is an 18-year Microsoft veteran who recently joined SMS&P from his previous role overseeing Microsoft’s sales, marketing and operations in Central and Eastern Europe.
“Our customers are relying more and more on our partners,” Turner said. “Jon deeply understands the critical factors a customer goes through in making IT buying decisions. He will leverage his depth of knowledge in his new role, and I’m confident he will ensure that our partners continue to win and grow in the marketplace.”
Watson will assume the role of corporate vice president of the Business & Marketing Organization in the U.S. and will report to Robert Youngjohns, senior vice president of North America Sales & Marketing. In her new role, Watson will focus on U.S. marketing and strategic business development, including work to ensure that customers take advantage of Microsoft’s latest product releases and have a clear view into the company’s cloud computing offerings. Watson has led the Microsoft Partner Group since 2002, establishing world-class leadership for Microsoft and aligning the company’s partner strategy with the business needs of its partners.
“Over the past eight years, Allison has been instrumental in building the Microsoft ecosystem to the global strength and value that it has today. Partners commend her for her leadership,” Turner said. “She has built an impressive set of programs and infrastructure to help our partners unlock greater business value with our collective customers, and I know she will bring her worldwide best practices from the partner ecosystem to drive equally impressive results in our largest market, the U.S. subsidiary.”
Roskill and Watson will address partners at the company’s annual Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, taking place July 11–15 in Washington, D.C.

President Bill Clinton to Headline WPC 2010 as Guest Speaker
The Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2010 is honored to announce that President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States, will be the official WPC 2010 guest speaker. President Bill Clinton will be presenting “Embracing our Common Humanity” on Wednesday, July 14, in Washington, D.C.
Biography:
William Jefferson Clinton was the first Democratic president in six decades to be elected twice – first in 1992 and then in 1996. Under his leadership, the country enjoyed the strongest economy in a generation and the longest economic expansion in U.S. history, including the creation of more than 22 million jobs.
After leaving the White House, President Clinton established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the mission to strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. Today the Foundation has staff and volunteers around the world working to improve lives through several initiatives, including the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (now the Clinton Health Access Initiative, a separate nonprofit organization) which is helping 2 million people living with HIV/AIDS access lifesaving drugs. Other initiatives including the Clinton Climate Initiative, the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative, and the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative are applying a business-oriented approach worldwide to fight climate change and develop sustainable economic growth in Africa and Latin America. As a project of the Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative brings together global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. In the U.S., the Foundation is working to combat the alarming rise in childhood obesity through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and is helping individuals and families succeed and small businesses grow.
In addition his Foundation work, President Clinton has joined with former President George H.W. Bush three times – after the 2004 tsunami in South Asia, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hurricane Ike in 2008 – to help raise money for recovery efforts and served as the U.N. Envoy for Tsunami Recovery.
Building on his longstanding commitment to Haiti as President and through his Foundation, President Clinton was named U.N. Special Envoy for Haiti in 2009 to assist the government and the people of Haiti as they “build back better” after a series of hurricanes battered the country in 2008. Following this year’s devastating earthquake, President Clinton dedicated Clinton Foundation resources to help with immediate and long term relief and assistance, and at the request of President Obama, joined with President George W. Bush to establish the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, which supports highly effective organizations on the ground in long-term rebuilding efforts.
President Clinton was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas. He and his wife Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton have one daughter, Chelsea, and live in Chappaqua, New York.
We are very pleased to welcome President Bill Clinton to the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2010 in July.
